A little preparation goes a long way.
Choose an area around your daily plans, rather than a landmark name alone.
If the Bund is the priority
Being near the Bund, having a walkable route to it and having a river-view room are different. Check crossings and vehicle access, and do not confuse straight-line map distance with the actual walk.
For neighbourhood life
A neighbourhood base can suit cafés and short local walks. Building and street conditions vary, so confirm lifts, vehicle access and the evening environment, especially with older relatives or substantial luggage.
When continuing to Suzhou or Hangzhou
Confirm the actual departure station for rail travel, or the onward road route for a private transfer. Airport and station proximity do not automatically make a good sightseeing base. Balance one transfer against the rest of the stay.
One night and three nights need different priorities
For a late arrival and early departure, connections may dominate. For several nights, dining, rest and daily access matter more. Compare two actual hotels and their trade-offs rather than declaring one area best for everyone.
Start with these details
Message “Shanghai hotel area” with nights, next stop and whether you want afternoon breaks.
