A little preparation goes a long way.
An app, a wallet and a bank card are different things. A familiar logo is not enough to confirm payment access.
Messaging and payment are separate
Using WeChat messaging does not mean payment is ready. Check identity, phone and card requirements in the wallet. Available international-card payment scenarios depend on the current app instructions.
Merchant payments versus transfers
International-card merchant purchases and balance or transfer functions have different conditions. Paying in a restaurant does not establish that you can transfer money to a guide or friend. Agree on a formal booking payment method in advance.
Already use a wallet at home?
For a wallet used in Singapore, Malaysia or elsewhere, check its mainland-China cross-border mode, supported merchants, verification and fees within that product. Country, account version and coverage differ; support is not universal acceptance.
Have a second route
Companions may use different cards and wallets. Keep at least one independent backup per family and agree how shared expenses will be recorded, reducing the need for last-minute transfers during the trip.
