A little preparation goes a long way.
Payment verification, pickup coordination and maps all depend on a working connection.
Start with your provider
Check mainland roaming charges for data, calls and SMS separately, and whether activation is needed. Review device unlocking and dual-SIM support. Keeping your original number for messages and using a separate data plan are different decisions.
Read the plan, not only the data allowance
Check coverage, when validity starts, tethering and device compatibility. A data-only plan may not include a phone number or ordinary calls. For a local SIM, confirm documents and the service location; foreign travellers can apply with a passport under the operator’s process.
Agree a backup contact
Agree a primary and backup contact method before departure. Do not assume the same overseas app will work on every network. Save the Chinese address, meeting instructions and phone numbers offline.
On arrival
Check data and messages, then let your pickup contact know you have arrived. If you cannot connect, use the agreed alternative or airport assistance. Stay with the agreed meeting instructions rather than changing locations without contact.
